Petone Station on the Hutt Valley line is an important commuter interchange. The fabric of the station, which opened in 1905, was rapidly deteriorating and in 2003 a decision was made to replace it, retaining some of the original structure but complimenting it with a new booking office and waiting room. The verandah supports appear to be from the earlier station at Petone as they date from 1874. The rebuilding was an undertaking of the Hutt Council, Greater Wellington Regional Council and Tranz Rail Ltd. These photographs show the station prior to redevelopment through to its official reopening on 3rd March 2004.
